With the long weekend upon us there are more guests and traffic in Huron Woods so a good time to remind us all of the rules of the road. Walking in the absence of sidewalks the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (section copied below) indicates that pedestrians should always walk facing oncoming traffic. It is an important safety precaution for both those walking and those driving. (Note that while it references ‘highway’ the act applies to all public roadways).
The Act reads:
Duties of pedestrian when walking along highway
179 (1) Where sidewalks are not provided on a highway, a pedestrian walking along the highway shall walk on the left side thereof facing oncoming traffic and, when walking along the roadway, shall walk as close to the left edge thereof as possible. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 179 (1).
Also a reminder to drivers to please slow down. There are more children and bicycles on our streets and with vegetation fully grown in, there are blind spots on our bends and corners. Please be extra cautious when driving. Please remind your guests of the need for extra caution.
Have a great long weekend!
