From Brian Lassenby:
You may have recently noticed some 911 signs in our neighbourhood sporting a monarch wing logo. This logo, together with a set of guidelines called the Huron Woods Accord, is a new initiative developed by the Habitat Stewardship Group. As a property owner, it will help show your support for the lasting protection of our unique natural habitat, including our globally rare oak savanna and the Old Ausable Channel. The logo is made of durable powder coated steel and manufactured by a local business at a cost of $15. Installation will be provided for free. Attached is a copy of the Accord, along with the design of the logo. If you are interested in being part of this program,
please contact Sharon (519-238-6586)

V. Limit artificial Lighting! I noticed Lambton shores replaced the Street light at Pinetree Dr. and Riverview Rd. ( a year back) They used one of those white Bright light bulbs instead of the Yellow. Our Cottage sits 300+ feet back from the road and this light Bulb lights up our whole driveway. It is so bright that it reminds me of National Lampoons Christmas Vacation when Chevy Chase finally get’s his Christmas lights turned on! I have to think this is damaging for the creatures of the forest. Can we get Lambton Shores to revert back to the Yellow light? Huron Woods is beautiful for it’s Savanna Ecosystem.
Yes that is a problem as our next door occupants leave their outdoor lights on 24/7 and had a large outdoor light installed up in a tree that shines brightly into our home…most unpleasant to say the least!
@Sharon – we would love to be part of this initiative. Please let us know how to pay/ order this.
@John: I hope you let your neighbour know that you do not like the light as they may not realize that it is not ok with you. Question: We inherited from previous owners a motion- sensor light up on the corner of the house. It is ON when some motion is detected. Is this type of light ok?
These are vey important points to take note of. we live in a unique ecosystem with many organisms we hardly notice, yet may are fundamental in maintaining ecosystem function which we ultimately depend on. It’s hard to overstate the importance of intact ecosystems. Actively removing invasive species and keeping the understory as natural as possible goes a long way in preserving our rare oak savanna.
Chris… That new light is indeed a bright one! Municipal lighting is outside the scope of what this initiative is meant to accomplish, but if enough residents raise the issue with Lambton Shores, perhaps there’s a lower wattage alternative that could be investigated. Although the newer led lights are more energy efficient and have a longer lifespan than the old yellow sodium vapour lights, my understanding is that the spectrum produced by the led lights attract more nocturnal insects, and are therefore more detrimental to them.
Ani… Motion detecting lights might be a good compromise. They’ll probably disturb wildlife less than lights that are left on all night.
