Thanks Angela. The reversed duct tape as a 6 inch band about 3 feet off the ground worked like a charm.
Just periodically smush the caterpillars gathered below the tape with rubber gloves on, and knock the caterpillars already on the leaves down to the ground.
I had previously tried the burlap, but about a third of them worked their way up and over.

I also had success with duct taping. An alternative to squishing is dropping them into a bucket of soapy water. Both work. Always learning something new living in the Woods.
