Would you like to help protect the turtles?
With the channel close by many of us are visited by turtles when they come ashore to nest. Hope Brock of the Ausable Conservation Authority is available if you find turtles nesting on your property and would like to help.
From Hope Brock:
Turtle Nest Protection – We are once again offering nest protection enclosures to landowners who may get turtles nesting on their property. Nesting season generally takes place from late May to early July. This is a great opportunity to prevent the nests from being destroyed by raccoons, skunks, etc.
Turtle Workshop – Please note that we will be holding our annual spring workshop on Thursday, May 16th at 7pm at the Port Franks Community Centre. Please pre-register with me by May 14th. This is an opportunity to learn about your local turtles and learn how you can help them by participating in the community turtle monitoring program.
Turtle Basking Logs – We are planning to install some basking logs in L Lake this spring. Basking is an essential part of a turtle’s daily activities, and enables them to effectively forage and reproduce.
As always, we’re looking forward to hearing all about your turtle sightings this year!
